Our route through Portugal was very short as we needed to head east to pick up our antipodal point just to the west of Madrid.
Our route through Brazil was really tough, huge climbs everyday and unbearable humidity. Brazil ended up being one of, if not the hardest country of the entire journey.
Our route through Argentina took us from the top of the Andes, down through the vast deserts and out into the flat lands which at the time were the hottest place on earth.
Our route through Chile was very short but we decided to pop down to the coast at Vina Del Mar so that we could complete a full coast to coast crossing of South America.

Our route through New Zealand took us from Queenstown in the stunning south Island all the way up to Auckland on the North Island.
Cycling in Australia turned out to be much tougher than we were expecting. There is a lot to say about this massive country so I’ll break it down into states, but before I do I’ll mention the weather and time of year.
From the border (with thanks to Google maps) we took a fairly quite route through the city, the first part was mostly on roads and the final 8 miles were mostly on cycle paths. The closer you get to the “city center”, around the Marina Bay area the more cycle paths you will find.
The upside to all this rain is the scenery, it is beautiful in Malaysia. The land is much more sculpted here too and residents often look after the land around their houses much like you would expect to find in Europe.
Upon first entering Thailand from Cambodia the roads were very pleasant, plenty of space and very little traffic. However as we got closer to Bangkok, the traffic volume steadily increased.
Cambodia was a pleasent country to cycle through, the roads are very smooth, the traffic is light and the route we took was very flat. We had a 50/50 mix of head winds and tail winds with the wind changing on a daily basis.
Vietnam is quite an easy country to bike tour through, the roads are excellent (much like China) and the road side facilities such as shops, restaurants and hotels are plentiful.
In August 2022 we set off on a little tour of the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides. Our route took us along the western edge of the highlands, briefly crossing onto the Isle of Skye and then returning back to the main land.
The roads in Loas are quite a mixed bag, they have everything from dirt roads to newly paved roads and everything in between. Overall cycling here is quite nice but the mixed road surfaces can slow you down.
Our journey through China start in the Xinjiang province, to put it lightly this is not the friendliest welcome into China you’ll ever receive. Xinjiang is an automatous region of China and is a full-blown police state.
We first entered Kazakhstan at Kuryk Port after crossing the Caspian Sea from Azerbaijan. This seems like a bizarre place to build a ferry complex as it’s in the absolute middle of nowhere. The port itself is actually quite well equipped.
Where do I even begin with the roads of Uzbekistan… I am sorry to report that during our time in Uzbekistan we experienced what were by far the worst roads we have ever ridden on.
After Georgia the roads in Azerbaijan were an absolute treat, you can only imagine our delight so roll into Azerbaijan and discovers it’s pristine black ribbons of perfection!
The roads in Georgia were nothing short of terrible. Of all the countries we’ve visited we rank Georgia as the second worse, only to Uzbekistan.
The road surface in Turkey was for the most part, exceptional. We had not yet travelled to any country that had some smooth and undamaged roads. It was an absolute treat to ride here.
We entered Bulgaria from North Macedonia at the top of an enormous hill and were immediately welcomed by a great big downhill!
Our first stop was Skopje, we really enjoyed our short time there and the city has some wonderful statues and interesting history. The weather was not on our side during our visit to North Macedonia and it rained on and off every day.
We didn't spend much time in Kosovo but the time we did spend was pleasant. The roads were in good condition and the traffic was very light.
Albania was our first real culture shock of the trip, the world took a very sudden change from the developed european world to a much poor and culturally different one. The first and most noticable difference was the road quality and the change in vehicles.
