Our cycling route through Laos

The map above shows the route we cycled through Laos. We entered Laos from northern Vietnam and exited back into south central Vietnam.

The roads in Loas are quite a mixed bag, they have everything from dirt roads to newly paved roads and everything in between. Overall cycling here is quite nice but the mixed road surfaces can slow you down.

The most noteworthy part of Laos is it hills, the north of Laos is very hilly and they are steep! Going up is a slog and going down is a good old test on your brakes!

Once we got to Vang Vieng it was mostly downhill to the capital, Vientiane and then mostly flat back to Vietnam.

At the time we decided not to visit Luang Prabang because honestly we couldn’t face anymore hills. We were tired and it was really hot in Loas.

Vang Vieng was a nice stop off for a few days, tourism was quite quiet at the time which may have made it a bit more enjoyable for us as we don’t usually enjoy that kind of place.

After Vientiane the route was quite dull and very hot. The one advantage of the big hills in the north is that it is a little cooler when you’re high up. In the south it’s just hot all the time.

Although there are not a huge amount of facilities on the roads in Laos we managed to find accommodation on all but one night, the night we didn’t find any we camped on a wooden platform quite high up a hill. The temperature was reasonably cool and overall it wasn’t too bad.
