Our cycling route through North Macedonia
The map above shows the route we cycled through North Macedonia. We entered North Macedonia from it's northern boarder with Kosovo and exited through the eastern border into Bulgaria.
North Macedonia was another very short country for us, much like Kosovo the roads were in good conditions and traffic was light meaning that we felt safe and comfortable riding here.
Our first stop was Skopje, we really enjoyed our short time there and the city has some wonderful statues and interesting history.
The weather was not on our side during our visit to North Macedonia and it rained on and off every day. The border crossing into Bulgaria is at the top of an enormous hill and of course it decided to rain to entire way up, it was quite a challenging climb up to the border and took quite a lot longer than we expecting. The two previous days had both brought thunder storms and it was a little scary riding through the mist to the top of a big hill with the worry of thunder and lightning looming.
Several people recommended visiting the lakes near to Bitola, however given that we had already been delayed in Albania and that we really wanted to get through China before winter we decided that we didn't have the time.

Hey! We’re Zoe and Stew, and we love sharing all things cycling, hiking, and adventure-related.
We’ve cycled through 29 countries and counting. In New Zealand, we had a secret, spontaneous elopement and it was amazing!

The blog started to take shape after we met in 2018 – at work, of all places. Zoe, with a life-long love of writing, started to blog more frequently, and we started an Instagram blog too. On Instagram, we document the moments captured in adventure.
We love the small joys of travel – like captivating moments watching the wildlife. We live for epic moments like free-wheeling down the mountains in China or cycling over Los Andes (trip highlight). And we make sure to document all those challenging moments too – like taking weeks off a world cycling tour in Azerbaijan to wait for hospital results for potential parasites or pulling our bikes through mud as deep as our knees! It’s been a roller coaster of adventure!
