Our Outer Hebrides cycling route
In August 2022 we set off on a little tour of the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides. We were living in the Highlands at the time so set off from and finished at our home in Kinlochleven.
If you happen not to be living in Kinlochleven then we still highly recommend visiting and it’s a wonderful little village at the end of the stunning Loch Leven.
Our route took us along the western edge of the highlands, briefly crossing onto the Isle of Skye and then returning back to the main land.
The route is very enjoyable throughout, however the section from Kyle of Lochalsh to Ullapool is simply breath taking.
If you have the time we recommend turning left at Kinochewe and following the coastal road to Ullapool (via Laide). This route is even more spectacular but takes a considerably longer time by bicycle as it’s very hilly.
We spent a day in Stornoway exploring but honestly there wasn’t much to see. The northern island down to Levenburgh was very enjoyable, however the central island was quite dull.
It may be that you need to get off the main route to really enjoy this island but due to time constraints on the trip we didn’t have that luxury. We were also battling a fierce headwind through all of our times in the Hebrides which really slowed us down and left us very tired.
The southern island was very nice but again due to the wind conditions it was very difficult to get out and enjoy it.
If I’m completely honest I probably wouldn’t return to the Outer Hebrides again, there wasn’t much going on and the main land Highlands is much more enjoyable.
