Meet Marko And Vita!

The warmshowers hosts who changed our route for the better.

Marko encompasses exactly what warmshowers is all about. He’s an experienced cyclist whose travelled A LOT by bike…over 38 countries. He knows biketouring!

You can imagine how excited we were to stay here, especially after a lonely time in Italy.

On arrival we were treated to a warmshower (of course), peach juice – pressed using the peaches from their garden, a dinner, homemade wine and for pudding, Tiramisu homemade by Vita. Just when we thought we’d eaten everything, we were presented with Potina – a traditional Slovenian cake baked by Marko’s mother.

After dinner Marko and Stew sat down and talked routes. “This is what I would do, if I would be you”, Marko said. Marko wrote on 3 pieces of A4 paper (front and back) and listed all the places we should visit, the roads, ferries and details we’d need to make “his route” a success. I was impressed as Marko reeled this information from the top of his head; a natural tour planner. This was a route inspired from his own tours, a route he knew was beautiful.

Highlights of the last 6 weeks include: a tour of Slovenia (a 200mile route bringing us back to the town Marko lives in), followed by the beautiful coastline of Croatia and its islands, Bosnia including some gorgeous mountain roads, the stunning coast of Montenegro and the hilly (but beautiful) Albania.

Marko promised us that the route would be hillier than our original plan, but he’d ensured he’d included some of the most beautiful parts of the countries we were riding through.

We’ve been challenged, but we’ve loved it. We haven’t thought about our original route once and since meeting Marko this bike ride really got going!

We couldn’t be more grateful to have met Marko. He was a great host, an inspiration and Marko has continued to check in with us and advised us along the way. We will forever remember the difference Marko made to our circumnavigation of the world. Thanks to him we’ve seen some of the most beautiful places and on several occasions we’ve stopped in awe and admired our views, stating “this is why we’re doing what we’re doing”.
