The Statue Of Miljo

I deliberately left this part of Plovdiv out of my story so I could write about it here.

This statue of Miljo was my favourite feature in the city.

It’s thought that a local man considered the statues in Plovdiv to be communist statues and unrepresentative of the city. Therefore a statue of Miljo was commissioned.

I immediately loved the statue, there was something warm about the character. Miljo could be considered a local legend.

He was partially-deaf and crazy and he could often be seen on the wall of the high street. Everyone knew Miljo and he was always there to listen. It’s thought that even though he was deaf and crazy Miljo always had the right words to help with the woes of life. As you can see from the picture Miljo holds open one ear, apparently you can whisper your hopes and dreams to Miljo and they will come true.

In addition to this, Miljo has another skill…you see where his knees are shiny… it is believed you can rub Miljo’s leg/knee for luck in your romantic life! He was considered to be a bit of a success with the ladies…hence his hand tucked into his pocket…I’ll say no more!!

Miljo is a bit part of Plovdivian spirit and even after years people remember him well. I feel like every town has a Miljo and I love that a statue was built to remember him.
