Well, We Are Having A DAY
It started off so well. We cycled 50 miles like it was nothing.
There was no headwind; finally a break from pushing a wind for basically ten days straight.
We were buzzed. The energy was high and we’re chatting on the road.
We arrive early in our destination, get lunch.
We’re buzzed about the early finish.
Next, we figured we’d go to one of the 23 hotels on Google Maps.
This will be EASY. Right?
Wrong.
Hotel after hotel: full.
Even *massive* hotels.
We try others: full, full, full.
Shit…
We meet many other travellers; two on foot, wheeling a suitcase. They need a room, too.
I can smell a storm.
The next town is 50 miles away.
I fell off my bike, grazed my knee, and bruised my hands.
On the grounds of a hotel, an aggressive dog came at me and it was *very* close.
He was backing me against a wall.
The owner came just in time before I was bitten or that dog had a cleat to its face 😂
The heavens open and the thunder starts rumbling…
Could this day get worse?
We go to a restaurant to get out the storm and make a plan.
While there we meet the most lovely family. A woman, Yanina, is talking with us.
She’s very kind, I could tell straight away. I asked if she’d call hotels for us.
She agrees and calls over 8 hotels, nothing.
I offer a bottle of wine for her help, but she refuses.
She felt like an angel.
Eventually, the restaurant closed and the family went to their cabin.
So kind, Yanina offers us to follow her to her cabin where she will keep calling hotels for us, but we feel like an inconvenience on her holiday!
We send each other blessings and exchange Instagram and she promises to keep trying for us. If she finds somewhere, she will message.
A beautiful soul.
Next, we head to a 24 hour service station which is where I think we will spend our night.
Stew is messaging every place.
Why don’t you camp?! I hear you ask!
Well friend, because we have seen a full sized ALIGATOR on the side of the road DEAD for the last few days, and many more small ones.
We don’t fancy our chances, thanks 😂
