Songkran In Bangkok
We arrived in Bangkok just in time for the Thai New Year, Songkran.
We knew that Songkran was around the corner and decided to experience it wherever we ended up, in the city or amongst the small villages.
We arrived in Bangkok the day before it all kicked off so figured we’d stay for the duration.
Songkran was pretty mind blowing, to be honest! The tradition is a country wide waterfight across Thailand and its the same in Cambodia, too.
Everywhere you look there’s water, paddling pools, water guns and buckets of the stuff. Some of it is ice cold and without a moments notice it’ll be thrown over you. 😂 cold, cold water is always welcome in SEA though!
No one is safe! In queues of traffic you will get soaked with those in cars holding all the power.
The water fight never felt aggressive for a moment, just fun! Although there was one time during a day of walking the city when Stew and I didn’t really want to get wet but two guys threw two buckets of water at us anyway. 😳😬😂
We dared to venture up Khaosan Road for the waterfight. We knew it would be busy but we had a plan – to find a bar with a balcony – and watch the madness unfold from the safety of the bar and a cocktail each.
Well let me tell you, that was wishful thinking 😂
instead we were funnelled, very much amongst the crowd, that was packed together like sardines and everyone walked a km or so along the road throwing water all over the place 😂
We could not move if we wanted to and once you start your pilgrimage of Khaosan Road during Songkran you are going in one direction only whether you like it all not 😂
Music blared from the pubs, people danced and water was everywhere. Some parts were literally flooded.
I felt especially sorry for a couple of tourists who rocked up to the road with a SUITCASE, wheeling it through the chaos. Like us, they underestimated Thai New Year and would be starting their holiday with a completely wet suitcase 😬😬
