Rio De Janeiro Has A Bit Of A Reputation
Rio De Janeiro has a bit of a reputation for crime, muggings and pickpockets.
If you ask us, it’s a shame!
It’s hard to shake off that feeling when you’re constantly reading that you need to look out for it.
I actually felt quite happy and safe there.
My thoughts are that you can get mugged basically anywhere. I got pickpocketed in England once and lost my iPhone 🤷🏻♀️
It feels to me like a story that’s just passed on without any real evidence.
Though, I wouldn’t get drunk in Rio, personally. I’d want my inhibitions about me.
I wonder also if the reputation for theft is part-driven because Rio famously has the favelas (slums).
You can take A TOUR to the favelas, as in you can pay money to visit one.
Unreal.
Does that give anyone the ICK, or is it just me? Feels like treating people like a human zoo.
For a cycle tourist, you don’t need to PAY to see such an experience, we cycle through the outer cities enough.
Either I am comfortable to visit a place alone, or I don’t go at all. I must admit, city suburbs and bordering towns are always my most nervous days cycling.
What do you think? Is this kind of tourism okay?
