You can trust us. We only review items we use on long-distance cycle trips or hikes. Or, items that made the shortlist for our trip's kit list; all items were heavily researched by us.

I couldn’t believe the difference that 1,000-mile socks made to my hiking experience. I’m not going to waste your time; I’m happy to say it loud and proud: 1,000-mile socks are the best socks for hiking.

Stewart introduced me to 1,000-mile socks early in our relationship, and I haven’t looked back. Stew got into hiking in about 2015 and started wearing 1,000-mile socks in 2017. Anyone who reads this blog a lot or followed us on Instagram when we cycled around the world will know that Stew is a careful planner and researcher. He looks into everything, so when he recommended 1,000-mile socks, I was too happy to try them!

Stew and I especially love the double-layer socks. They have impressed us repeatedly on hikes and thru-hikes, and in this blog, I’m giving you our full review of the double-layer 1,000-mile hiking socks.

Our experience with 1,000 Mile Socks

As above, Stew introduced me to 1,000-mile socks when we first met. Back then, we weren’t doing overly long hikes, just a morning or afternoon. At most, we may have walked about 15 miles.

As we became more interested in hiking, we started taking the socks with us as we hiked longer distances, 26 miles in a day, or thru-hikes like 96 miles along West Highland Way and 84 miles along Hadrian’s Wall.

We did Hadrian’s Wall with my brother, Adam, and recommended 1,000-mile socks to him. Like us, Adam has a positive review of the 1,000-mile socks, he loves them, and he wont buy anything else now.

West Highland Way was my first thru-hike. On that hike Stew didn’t blister at all, but I did get a tiny, tiny blister on my little toe. It wasn’t an issue at all.

Why you should buy the 1,000 Mile Socks

I have two anecdotes to show you exactly why you should buy 1,000-mile socks, and what might happen if you don’t…

My experience walking Snowdon with and without 1,000-mile socks

This story is about me. In my early hiking days, I walked up Snowdon, which isn’t even a particularly long hike (around four miles uphill). I was wearing an entry-level hiking boots but a normal pair of cheap socks.

When I finished the hike, I had the biggest blister of my life and had to finish it with it. The blister covered basically my entire heel. It was awful.

After switching to 1,000-mile socks, I’ve barely blistered on any hike, many much longer, and I’ve walked Snowdon at least twice wearing them with absolutely no blister at all.

Walking West Highland Way with and without 1,000-mile socks

This second story is about a fellow hiker on West Highland Way and his experience compared to ours.

As mentioned above, when Stew and I walked West Highland Way, we wore 1000-mile socks the entire way, and our feet were comfortable.

On the same hike, a fellow walker had blistered so severely on the second day that he was hobbling the rest of the route. His experience is highly comparable to ours because, on day one and two, we stopped at the exact same place, camping meters from each other.

Stew and I saw him a few times when he was hiking, and I was tempted to recommend the 1,000-mile socks, but I was conscious about being that annoying hiker giving unsolicited advice. Also, I admit, I’m not convinced they would’ve worked when severe blisters were already there.

Anyway, on the route, on West Highland Way, the campsites and shops sold 1,000-mile socks. I felt terrible that I didn’t recommend that he try them. I later found out he was thinking about it as well. Amazingly, he managed to walk the entire way, and we crossed the finish line with him.

Our 1,000-mile sock review: we wouldn’t buy anything else!

1,000 Mile Socks have secured their place in our adventure gear.

We've tried and tested 1,000-mile socks on a range of hikes, shorter, longer, dry, and wet, and we can confidently say we’ll use them again! We wouldn’t recommend something that we didn’t love.

If you have a story about your tried-and-tested experience with 1,000-mile socks, we’d love to hear it in the comments!

Frequently asked questions about 1,000-mile socks and hiking socks.

Are 1000-mile socks any good for walking?

It should be pretty obvious from our review that I love 1,000-mile socks for walking. If you experience blisters while walking (like I once did), you should definitely try these socks.

Are double socks good for hiking?

Double socks are thought to be beneficial for hiking because they offer additional protection against blisters. The idea is that instead of the sock rubbing directly against your heel, the socks rub together, which saves your skin.

The notion of double socks being good for hiking is exactly why the 1,000-mile socks have a version with the double-layer system; one layer stays with the foot, and the other moves with the shoe. This means friction isn’t directly against the skin. The double layer also provides extra cushioning and can absorb more moisture, keeping feet drier and more comfortable during hikes.

Which socks are best for long walks?

In my opinion, double-layer 1,000-mile socks are the best for long walks, and, for what it’s worth, I think they’re best for short walks, too.
