Mount Gambier
Judith and Doug told us to visit Mount Gambier. It was already on route but we followed their advice and booked an extra night.
It’s a peaceful town and there were a few places to explore.
Blue Lake is located in a dormant volcanic crater. At the right time of year, blue lake is blue-blue. We were there in winter so didn’t get the benefit of the summer sun and the heat to see the lake in all its glory but the pictures at the tourist information point looked stunning. In fairness, even in winter, blue lake was lovely!
It’s thought that the lake gets its rich colour from the heat. If the water reaches 20° Celcius (68° Fahrenheit), the solubility of calcium carbonate in the water decreases. The calcium carbonate precipitates out of the water and forms micro-crystals, which scatter blue light. ✨
In Mount Gambier, there’s also a beautiful cave garden that you can explore. There are other caves but with a fee to get in,we gave them a miss. 😋
