Melbourne
We arrived in Melbourne on the 22nd August and ended up with just two nights there. We had planned for longer but it took us longer than anticipated to cycle here and although we had enough time on our visa we weren’t feeling too safe to relax for much longer anywhere.
So, we had to make what time we had count.
It was actually my birthday (23rd August) and I wanted a calm one.
We simply strolled through the city, grabbed a drink, wandered to the model village and enjoyed Melbourne’s botanical gardens.
The model village was my first one. Stew visited a really impressive one in the UK, but the one in Melbourne was a little underwhelming. The model village did have a little bit of a story though.
The Tudor village was donated to the Melbourne from Lambeth, England. It was gifted to in appreciation for the generosity demonstrated by sending food to Britain during World War Two. 😁
On the 23rd I turned 33 and we went for dinner at Chin Chin, an Asian inspired restaurant with a beautiful small plate menu. We ate eight perfectly portioned and very delicious dishes. We enjoyed mocktails because we were cycling the next day. The bar staff accidently made two of mine so I lucked out and bagged a free one.
Walking through Melbourne with Stew on my 33rd birthday was pretty wonderful actually. After covid and three years of being stuck indoors or working too hard I can honestly say I felt younger aged 33 than I did 32 and 31. I put it down to the exercise, the fresh air and I think largely the exploration and excitement of the world by bike really makes you feel young. And that’s what a cycle tour will do to ya 😋 mind you, there are days where my knees feel at least 60 but they have done a lot, haven’t they 😅
