Georgian Porridge
Pictured is a bowl of porridge, but it’s a little different to the porridge I know and eat in England.
When we stayed in Batumi, Stew and I stayed with a Georgian family. This family cooked dinner and breakfast for us and welcomed us into their home for 2 nights.
During our stay they were celebrating the new arrival of a baby girl into the family. Stew and I got involved with the new-baby preparations by helping to blow up balloons to welcome mother and baby home.
So where does porridge come into this?
According to our host, porridge is not a breakfast item you can find on the menus in Georgia. Our host explained that it’s cooked by combining flour, water, salt and sugar. You then create a well, as pictured, and in the middle you pour melted butter. Upon serving a sprinkle of sugar is added.
It’s really delicious, but I think it’s wise to limit eating this especially when it was the added sugar really made the breakfast tasty
The porridge is enjoyed by Georgian families when a baby is born and thought to bring luck!
As we tried this porridge for the first time we were also told we should make a wish!
In Georgia it is said, I guess it’s like an old wives tales, that when you try new foods you should make a wish.
