6 Reasons Why West Highland Way Is The Best First Big Hike
Before West Highland Way I’d never really hiked. I’d walked plenty and completed some day hikes, but I never imagined I’d enjoy a multi-day hike.
Obviously, I loved it and here are some of the reasons why West Highland Way makes for an excellent first hike!
🌼 the hiking comradery is just lovely. If you started solo you wouldn’t end up solo, unless you wanted to of course! You pass the same people and share stories. You care when others are injured and offer help and they do the same for you.
☀️ the hike is remote enough that you feel like you’re on a real adventure and there are stretches where you need to make sure you’re self-sufficient (just incase!)
⭐️ you’re never too far from civilisation! A lot of WHW actually follows a main road so if you really needed to abandon the hike – you could! I think the longest stretch with no shop, stall or restaurant etc is maximum 10 miles.
💛 theres a fab organisation called @baggagefreedom and for £40 they will transport your luggage all week meaning you can walk with a day bag every single day! What’s better is that you can opt in at any time! So good if you get overwhelmed or don’t enjoy carrying your gear.
🟡 beautiful beautiful scenery throughout. Just gorgeous. Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries we’ve visited to date. Love it.
🟨 for the majority of the walk, wildcamping is LEGAL! Praise to the land reform act 👏🏼
