You Dont Need To Be Fit To Cycle Tour
We’re often asked if we did a lot of training before we left.
Here are some facts:
There are no rules to cycle touring. As long as you’re leaving one place on a bicycle and arriving at another, you’re cycle touring. It can be a few miles or a couple hundred, it’s up to you.
You get mega fit as you go.
Whatever mileage you start doing will naturally increase.
Riding a loading bike helps you drop pounds and fast.
On social media, it’s easy to look at people doing the stuff you wanna do and say, ‘that’s easy for you to say…’
But, I know first hand you can be unfit and set off and ride around the world.
Before we left England in 2019 I was fairly cycling fit. But I’d never ridden a loaded bike. My ride to check I liked back-to-back cycling was a JOGLE which I completed 9 months before we left the UK. I had an operation a couple months before we left the UK and was completely inactive during recovery. I recovered just in time leaving me no time to train.
Between 2020 and 2023, our period at home waiting for the world to normalise, I was probably the most inactive I’ve ever been. I even hit “obesity” on the BMI chart. 🤭
Hands down, I was in the worst physical condition of my entire life when we left home this year.
In Vietnam, only 6 weeks ago, I don’t think I could’ve cycled more than 3 days on my loaded bike – even on flat roads. Already, I could cycle for weeks. Last time I checked I’m overweight now; I lost 5kg (11lb).
Granted, I won’t cycle up every hill (as pictured). But I’ll get up ‘em, somehow.
The absolute truth is, if you’re worried about whether or not you can cycle tour you need to think less about your physical health and more about your mental health.
Cycle touring is a game of mental resilience over physical.
The good news, you train mental resilience out here, too.
So, I guess you’ve got no excuses now 🤔 unless you don’t like cycling…that is a perfectly good reason not to cycle tour.
I absolutely adore cycle touring. ❤️

Someone once told me that you only need to be ‘pub fit’ (able to make it to the next pub) to become a bicycle tour, and the rest will then take care of itself. Good advice!
This is actually perfect! You do only need to be ‘pub fit’ – thank goodness haha
