Why You Should Travel By Bike
If you’re thinking about travelling around the world I really think you should consider a bike.
🚲 You will see a country for what it really is. You will go to the hotspots where all the money is made and invested. Then you will ride 5-20 miles out of that spot and see the opposite.
🚲 You will eat what the locals actually eat which is less exciting than what you get at tourist spots. Chinese food is noodles, small amounts of fried meat and veg. Vietnamese food is noodle soup. In Cambodia it’s fried meat with rice. The fancy looking stuff, well yes they eat that too, but not on the daily and some people will not eat it at all.
🚲 You look interesting! If you’re riding on a loaded bike you’ve got a story and people know it. A loaded bike is the ultimate ice breaker and the gateway to a conversation.
🚲 You will have stories and memories that will outlive you.
🚲 You will do hard things almost every single day. Maybe I’m a sadist (lol) but I legitimately rate a bit of suffering in life. If you don’t suffer a bit you will never know true joy. If you don’t do something difficult you will never feel fulfilled. From my experience of talking to others, travelling without a bike can get boring. It’s too easy and you don’t have to earn anything. We’ve met directionless travellers who don’t seem to be having as much fun as we are. We even met travellers who are forcing themselves to stay out when in truth they are done, because they feel they should “live their dream”. They’ve got something to prove, but the reality of moving from one travel destination to another is actually underwhelming. We’ve met people who admit this several times. Cycling the world – or even a country – gives you a goal, and a blimmin’ hard one at that.
🚲 You will build mental and physical resilience if you commit to the journey. Ride every hill, turn down the offers of lifts and don’t give up. Train unbelievable mental strength that will transfer to all areas of life.
🚲 You will get freakin’ fit! No hill will be impossible. When we finished the trip we hiked 100 miles in the Scottish Highlands carrying everything on our backs with zero training.
Cycle travel is the absolute best.
