West Highland Way – Day 6
Day 6 – West Highland Way
Today was an 11 mile hike up Devil’s Staircase and down the other side to Kinlochleven.
Devil’s Staircase was nowhere near as bad as I expected, but it was a fairly steep 700ft climb. In fairness my calves were burning on the way up 🔥 I took regular breaks and as always on the steeper inclines, Stew led the way!
I think with a name like “Devil’s staircase” I was expecting something extraordinarily savage, so it was always going to be easier than I expected. I was always expecting a lot of steps — you know, like a staircase but there wasn’t much of that either.
We were really in the mountains today, and I can see why, on a clear day, Devil’s Staircase is a highlight for many. It would be stunning up there.
For us though, it’s been a very wet hike and the wind blew the lashing rain into por faces. The weather pretty much changed every 15-40 minutes today – from heavy showers and icy winds to the sun trying to break through the clouds and momentarily warming us up!
One of the joys of the the last couple days has been reliving some of the roads we cycled along when we did our John O’ Groats to Lands End in 2018. That was a ride that took us 1,022 miles from the top of Scotland to the south of England. It was a test ride to see how I liked riding my bike back-to-back. My first ever cycle tour!
