West Highland Way – Day 2
We woke up in our wildcamping spot to find 3-4 other campers had joined us! Assumedly others also walking WHW. We packed up quickly ate a porridge and banana breakfast and walked a further 2-4 flat miles. So, West Highland Way is pretty much completely flat for the first 18 miles…
…and then…
…and then you arrive at Conic Hill which is a steady climb up. Stew decided to give the “summit” a miss so I dumped my bag and hiked the last few feet for the view.
It’s quite a descent down Conic Hill, really quite steep and a lot of steps. It’s also really populated, like Snowdon.
In Balmaha, at the bottom of Conic Hill there’s a huge car park! We assume Conic Hill is always a popular spot.
I had major jelly legs and PB sandwiches weren’t going to cut it today, so I insisted on a “proper lunch” in Balmaha.
We found Oak Tree Inn and we tried haggis (a first time for me!) it was delicious 😋 and Stew has fish and chips – also delicious! The service there was fantastic. Staff were incredibly friendly and we even managed to top our water bottles there! The food was so good and even a Scotsman confirmed the haggis was delicious there!
After lunch we pressed on, as we had a lot to do! Total 17miles to make up for a 0.7mile deficit yesterday and getting out of the “no camping zone”. Wildcamping is mostly legal in Scotland but an area we walked through today was protected so to save a campsite we just kept going! We found a lovely cosy spot!
I’ve missed out a massive part of the day! You’ll notice dinner was missing but it needs a post of its own. I need wifi to get my hands on the video before I can share!
