The Worst One Mile!
Warning: melodramatic
I said I had the worse 1 mile on the final day, didn’t I?
Well here’s how that went…
We left Kinlochleven and walked into the rain. There were 16 miles ahead of us, but to be fair, we were in good spirits.
My calves were starting to ache towards the end of the hike and I could really feel them pulling, but it was okay….
…that was until we started climbing a hill within the first mile. There wasn’t enough time to warm up and I don’t stretch (oops) so my calves were BURNING 🔥
Now that was just one part of the misery because on the last day and I hate to say it, as there was sunshine, but we experienced the WORST weather for hiking – hot, but wet. Every few minutes the sun would shine through the clouds and it would stop raining instantly. On one occasion I was so hot I took my jacket off and within the time it took me to remove it and put my bag on it rained AGAIN!
Anyone who’s won waterproofs in warm weather will know the feeling. I hated it. I was so hot I felt a bit sick, so when I got to the top of some steps I stripped my top off to get some kind of breeze.
Now let me set the scene. I’m grumpy, I’m hot, I’m clammy, I feel incredibly unattractive and I’m half naked on a warm, clammy day surrounded by trees.
It took all of 2 minutes for the MIDGES to come swarmin’ in. They were all over me. There were so many that Stew just did one leaving me to bat them off, dress myself and get my bag off the ground 😂 when I put my hand to get them off my face I could feel loads 😩
And all of this – burning calves, half-nakedness, midge attacks and ever-changing weather happened within one single mile. I kid you not.
It was impossible for my “worst one mile” to last any longer as we were treated to the views as pictured in picture 2! And I have to say, the other 103 miles were a joy every step of the way!
Midge picture sent to me by Matt B 😂
Pic 1 actually taken on day 2
