The Road To Esperance

Within 24 hours, we went from, “there’s no way we will manage 100+ mile days here,” to, “we can do this!”

From Jerramungup to Ravensthorpe we managed 72 miles and we were DONE 💀 we were planning to camp but it was dropping dark already and we were cold. We stopped in a cabin instead. 

The next day, needing only to ride 50 miles (80kms) we left at 10. We absolutely FLEW that 50 miles and ended up in a less than desirable spot around 1pm so we decided we might aswell just carry on.

By 4pm, we’d cycled around 70 miles and we were both full of beans!

“I reckon we can get all the way to Esperance.” Stew said. 

It would take us to 120 miles in a day and it would be the longest ride of the day. 

With plenty in the tank, I was in. “Let’s do it!”

We rode for almost 9 continuous hours, stopping only for 20 minutes to eat a sandwich. 

By 5pm we called our accomodation to book in another night but our room wasn’t available and we couldn’t afford the next available room. Still, we might aswell get to Esperance and figure it out. 

The sun went down, we put headtorches on at 5:20 and carried on riding until 8pm. It was pitch black for 32 miles and rained for the last 20. We were gutted when that first drop landed! 

We must’ve looked really odd to uncoming drivers. Our light and reflectors were an unusual site, 2 bright headlights on our bikes, a head torch which would make us look like a big vehicle, but not…. plus the lights would be weaving. 😂 We’ve also got two huge reflectors on our panniers. 

We noticed uncoming traffic was comming very slow, probably wondering what on earth they were looking at. 

One vehicle slowed down to 12mph which felt a bit weird….we both thought he was going to stop and say something but actually, we think he was just slowing down to get a look at what on earth we were doing. 😂

We rolled into esperance and beelined for the maccas 🍟🍔 – not sure anything else would be open – and we put in the biggest order! 😂

We were in good spirits, full of energy and felt we could‘ve done more. 

I guess we might have 100-200 miles in the tank for Nullarbor plain. Amazing what you can do when the winds on your side 💨
