Trucking In Austrailia Is On Another Level!

Between Albany and Esperance we were properly introduced to road trains.

Honestly, road trains come fast and they are a bit scary! But most are kind enough and give you plenty of notice with a horn from way back.

To be fair, the roads are so straight you can see them for half a mile and hear them for longer. There’s plenty of warning to get the hell outta the way! 😜

Drivers carrying heavy, heavy loads don’t want to lose speed and don’t want to brake so we make it our job to get out the way, because we’re pretty low on the vehicle food chain on a couple of 🚲🚲

With the roads being generally straight and not many hills, generally, road trains have a lot of space to over take and most of them give you way more room than you need and a thumbs up as they whizz past. It’s not the case for all, of course, but for the most part, it’s really fine.

The one thing that is quite unpleasent though, is the water or stones that the overtaking throws up in the air.

To give you some perspecive, in the U.K., we have a limit of 18.5 metres for our trucks and they carry only one trailer. Road Trains have a max length of 53.5 metres and upto 4 trailers.

Road trains carry livestock, fuel, mineral ores, general freight! On this route, road trains are corssing Nullarbor which is the road that connects Western Austrailia to the rest of Aus.
