Work And Adventures In Australia

We cycled across Australia for £50/day until we got to about New South Wales.

When we left England we were committed to finishing the trip we started with the same budget of £40/day average. As we did in the first half we planned to save in Asia and spend more in Aus.

Most days we managed to stay under £40 in Aus by camping and using caravan sites. It’s actually really easy to spend £40/day if you do that.

We opted for caravan sites over wild camps so you’ d easily do it cheaper if you wanted to. It’s surprising how far your money can go if you’re very careful.

For us it was a challenge to camp a lot. We didn’t do a lot of that in the first half of the trip, mostly because we were in Asia for the majority of it so we didn’t need to.

The second half of this trip is starting to write itself though.

From Vietnam to Singapore we were carrying on from where we left off. And we felt the presence of the first half even as we made it to Singapore. There was a sense that arriving at the end of the land in Singapore wasn’t quite what it was supposed to be…

BUT, in Aus, the second half of the trip is starting to feel like its own adventure. It’s very different in some ways but equally as special…

Just as we arrived in New South Wales, my workload went nuts.

Back in Malaysia I had done a TONNE of work to carry me through my Aus adventure. I wanted to make sure all my clients were ok and that I had done enough that I would not be overwhelmed in Aus.

Then something happened…

My client base grew and existing clients started asking for more work (for more money, of course.)

Well, when life throws you an opportunity like that, you take it!

I was amazed at the opportunities that were coming to me and super-excited to take them on.

The thing is, if I need to do extra work I need to eat well and sleep well so we increased our budget to finish Aus.

It was a tough time actually. We were both spinning too many plates, riding in the day and writing and marketing and night. At one point I did get a twitchy eye which I get with stress. So….yeah…swings and roundabouts!

Work hasn’t been as crazy since and I’m glad about that, but it was really cool to get these opportunities on the road.

I thought not to share this because I don’t really want this adventure to become the work and travel type blog,

but then it really is part of the adventure.

I might post a bit more about it because it’s a real privilege and one that is available to more of you than realised.

I have to pinch myself sometimes.

The original plan with work was to push anything earned on the road into savings, but there is enough for us to also spend more on this trip…

and let me tell you it’s a lot easier to travel on a cheaper budget when you know its your only choice.

Like I said in my last post, this trip is starting to write itself and I’m not going to fight it anymore. With a bigger budget we can enjoy more luxuries, better food, more experiences and longer stays.

It’s time to lean into the adventure a bit more and let the second half of this trip write itself. 📖
