Meeting Kerry
Meet Kerry! Our brilliant Warmshowers host in Turangi. He was super patient with us because we arrived late after there was a car crash and a closed road; the only route we could take without a 40 mile detour.
The road closure was just as well because I was getting very tired and my vision seemed to be a bit off. I didn’t think anything of it until the headache started leaving me with no energy and a strong need to get into a bed STAT! I had a migraine and it made me ever so ill. 😫
We got to Kerry’s a day later than planned and settled down with a cuppa tea after a much needed hot (nevermind warm) shower! Kerry had cycled around South America and some of the places we’ll be heading so we enjoyed hearing his tales and seeing his pictures.
To our surprise, Kerry offered us a tour of the thermal pools. There are a of natural, geothermal pools in this part of NZ. He drove us to a cool spot and we went for a short walk. Kerry, bless him, was on a crutch due to an injury but still made this amazing effort.
Take a look at the pools, pretty cool?! In Turangi you can pay to go in for a swim, too.
We took the Desert Road to Turangi which we were warned about by many locals. They said it was busy and that they wouldn’t cycle it, but to us, it was quiet! We have learned that New Zealand’s busy is quite unlike everyone else’s busy 😋
That said…like I said earlier…there was a crash on that road the day before, so…I guess it does get a bit sketchy for bikes, but then what road doesn’t?
Along desert road you can see Mount Doom (any LoTR fans out there?) or Amon Amarth. Unfortunately, due to low cloud and rain we didn’t get the view we hoped for, but it was still cool.
