Meeting Alex At The Start Of The West Highland Way
It wouldn’t be right to start documenting our hike of West Highland Way without starting with this picture of me, Stew and Alex (@theweegiewheeler) right at the very beginning.
Alex and I “met” via Instagram in July 2018 when Stew and I cycled John O’Groats to Lands End (JOGLE) over 2 weeks. Alex was riding his own JOGLE, but in 6 days!
Over the last 2 years we’ve all talked online and we became friends. Alex watched from afar as we attempted to cycle halfway around the world and supported us as we failed. We watched his life unfold celebrated the joys and supported during the tougher times – just like good friends should.
Alex originally caught my attention on Insta because he cycled the first 300 miles (480kms) of JOGLE within 24 hours! I assumed he was an athlete! But he assured me it was just a hobby.
I later learned that Alex had a cycling club with over 500 members. He’d encouraged people to take up cycling and organises cycle rides every week. A lot of people have Alex to thank for their love of cycling.
Occasionally he and the club go further in pursuit of cycling adventures like Mallorca 312 and West Highland Way! Committed to the cause, Alex reports having to carry his bike across an 8 mile stretch along West Highland Way.
When Alex read our post yesterday he insisted that we meet! Unbeknown to us, Alex lived 4 miles away so drove over to meet us at the train station. We had a coffee together, had our first face-to-face conversation and Alex waved us off with every confidence that we’d succeed on our latest challenge!
We feel lucky to have connected with him – and finally, after two years we met. It certainly won’t be the last time!
