Laos Is Beautiful!
I think Laos might be the most beautiful country we’ve visited so far. It’s a bit early to say for sure, but the views are breathtaking.
The cycling is tough – we’ve had some of the hilliest days of the entire trip.
We knew it was hilly, but the grade and length of the hills has surprised us. Stew can frequently be found chilling at the top of a hill as I push my bike up.
Today we had a climb that went on for an entire 3 miles (5kms). Stew managed to cycle the entire way, how I do not know, because I pushed the entire hill, which is not easy either.
I kept pushing and resting, pushing and resting. I knew I wasn’t getting anywhere quickly so I resorted to setting a one minute timer on my phone. I’d push with all my might for one minute then rest for a few seconds and repeat. It got me motivated and kept me moving!
Whenever I’m struggling with the hills I just stop and feel the wind. I take a moment to think about where I am, I look around at the landscape and listen to the sounds of the animals. Sometimes the chirp of the insects or a cowbell close by. I love it.
Laos is going to be a big challenge where cycling is concerned. Laos will push us hard physically, but it gives back in abundance with breathtaking views and fabulous downhills.
