Angkor Wat And The Temple’s Of Siem Reap

Yesterday we visited Siem Riep’s incredible temples including Angkor Wat, and Ta Prohm where Tomb Raider was filmed.

There are around 50 temples but we only saw 6 in total. Originally there were as many temples as provinces but over time, Cambodia lost provinces to Thailand and Vietnam.

Take a look at picture 6, see how the tree has grown around/through the temples? It’s incredible how Mother Nature can break through the most robust human creations.

The tickets to see the temples were $37 each, which is quite a lot, but when you see the *incredible* restoration work in process with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) you can see it’s worth every penny. It’s incredible.

The team work to restore the fallen sandstone and other materials whilst protecting the conservation. Mother Nature is part of the temples now ☺️

We had a really fantastic day. We were driven around by a tuktuk who was lovely! He charged us $12 for the day including more cold drinks than we needed. We treated him to a nice lunch.

Everytime we visited a new temple he insisted we took a new bottle of water from the chiller. If anyone goes to SR I’d love to share his contact details so he can take you, too.

Our driver knew a bit about the temples so he could take us to the best 6 within a day and share some knowledge to fill the gaps of those we missed.

He also knew where to go to catch a sunset at the top of the hill. The last picture , the temple is behind us. The sunset was not the best as it set behind a thick cloud 🫣 but it was still worth it! ☀️
