Welcome To Uzbekistan!⁣⁣

We crossed the border to Uzbekistan on Monday 02nd September. We left Beyneu, Kazakhstan very early expecting to battle with the bad roads we’d been warned about by several other cyclists.

Blessed again, thanks to our 2 week delay in Baku some serious roadworks were nearing completion meaning we had beautiful, new, smooth tarmac all the way to the border.

We stopped at the first cafe we could find, which was listed on warmshowers. For $20 we got a room and registered our stay. The registration rules for Uzbekistan are not that clear. My understanding is that it used to be strict and you had to register every 3 days, but Uzbekistan has relaxed about this. Until recently UK citizens needed a visa to visit Uzbekistan but this has changed. As you can imagine our registration fears are real after Azerbaijan so we’ll be playing it safe and registering every 3 days!

Uzbekistan is known for its terrible roads and after cycling some of the world’s worst roads in Albania and Georgia I was pretty nervous about what was to come!

There are parts that are so bad; pot holes so deep and big I could literally lie in them! Washboard roads, as pictured are unpleasant and have an impact on my poor hands and bottom!

These roads don’t last for a huge distance and the first 50kms (ish) are the worst so far. Hopefully we’re through the worst, but we will see!
