Vientiane, Laos

Vientiane is the capital of Laos. It’s a quaint, quiet city with a number of Buddhist temples and stunning architecture.⁣

Look at picture 2 – what does that remind you of? Paris’ Arc de Triomphe maybe? It did us! For a moment it was like we’d rolled back to the Arc de Triomphe where we officially declared the start of our circumnavigation of the world by bicycle.⁣

Interestingly the building in picture 2, called Patuaxi Arch, is typically Laotian in design (thanks for this information Wikipedia!). ⁣

I would never have assumed that. ⁣

It was built between 1957 and 1968 and dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France. The name “Patuxai translates as “Victory Gate”.⁣

We took great pleasure wandering around Vientiane and taking in the sights. When we were there it was HOT. We managed to cover 8 miles strolling, but for every mile we walked we stopped for a cold drink, iced coffee or ice cream.

Iced coffee has ever tasted better.⁣
