That Wanaka Tree

Wanaka has a famous tree! It’s known as #ThatWanakaTree, so of course we popped down to take a look and take some not so impressive pictures of it.

I’ll be honest, the tree was a bit underwhelming to us, but if you look at that hashtag, it can look really majestic! Talented photographers have caught it looking really cool and the enhancements take it to another level.

It is supposedly one of the most photographed trees in the world. When we were there, there were a few others taking pictures. There’s a sign near by, in English and Chinese, asking people not to go out and climb the tree 🤦🏻‍♀️

In 2014, Kiwi photographer Dennis Radermacher won the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year award for best landscape photograph. This is the picture that put it on the map. His picture is really cool, to be fair.

Now the picture is insta-famous, but it is also considered a symbol of hope.
