Stopping For Pomegranate
We’d stopped at a mini-market because I was super tired and we still had 12 miles to go to the next town. I loaded up on chocolate , coffee and sugar to power me through.
We were sat near this Russian family who were enjoying a trip in Uzbekistan. It looked like they were on a large bus tour.
On the way to this market we’d passed lots stalls selling pomegranates and I’d resisted the urge to stop as the sun was slowly going down and we still had a long way to go.
At the market I’d said to Stew that I’d like to buy a couple of fresh pomegranates and as soon as I’d finished my sentence the gentleman on the left presented us with a pomegranate each that he’d gone out of his way to pick up for us.
Thrilled with the coincidence I told him what I’d said using my translator. He humbly declared that it was from God.
His wife on the right spoke very good English and we told her about our trip.
She said the pomegranate is symbolic of knowledge in this part of the world.
The symbolism is quite apt!
I’ve eaten pomegranate seeds before, but never from the fruit itself. I’ve bought the pre-packed seeds instead!
On this trip I’ve been presented with lots of fruits and nuts that I don’t recognise. Sometimes it’s because I am used to the foods being processed and packaged before I get my hands on them, so I don’t recognise them in their natural packaging. The other reasons is because I’m simply not explorative enough at home. We are so lucky to have food imported from all over the world so we can try such a range of foods, but I’m a devil for sticking to what I know!
When I go home I’d like to try more foods, opting for the fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that I don’t usually buy. It’ll be a good challenge to find more recipes to cook and there’s bound to be some health benefits in eating a more diverse diet.
