Our cycling route through Italy
The map above shows the route we cycled through Italy. We entered Italy along the southern coast from France and exited into Slovenia on the east.
We had mixed feeling about our route through Italy, the coast road from Cannes to Genoa with very beautiful but didn't have a whole lot of services that were easy to access. We found the occasional campsite and cafe but there wasn't much else.
After Genoa we headed inland with the intention of picking up the EuroVelo all the way to the east coast, however once arriving we discovered that this EuroVelo hadn't actually been built yet. It will still in the planning phase and we had to take several large detours and ended up on some quite busy roads.
We eventually picked up the cycle path along the Po river and cycling in Italy became much more enjoyable. The cycle path was excellent and the views were very pleasent but again there were very few services available and we had to wildcamp multiple times along the river.
We wanted to visit Venice but we couldn't afford to stay there, they also don't allow you to bring bicycles into the town so we re-routed up to Treviso where accomodation was cheaper and took a train into Venice.
After Venice we continued on some not-so-very interesting roads until we eventually picked up the coast again.
Overall the cycling in Italy was not very enjoyable, If we were to cycle through Italy again we would probably follow the coast down to the south.
