Making Tracks To China

After a restful few days in Almaty we made tracks towards Khorgos, China with a plan of reaching Charyn Canyon in 2 days. ⁣

The first day went smoothly and we did our planned miles. We woke early, ate breakfast and started our 65 mile day the next day. ⁣The autumnal colours are beautiful to cycle through, and we were treated to different types of views and roads, but the grey skies did not waiver.

We made just 45 miles before we decided to stop and set up the tent. ⁣

I’d like to be able to give an elaborate reason as to why we did so little in such a long day, but there wasn’t anything in particular…I guess I was just too slow! It was a climb, but a steady one.⁣

All day the skies had been grey, and by 5pm it started to rain. ⁣

Stew had stopped and suggested we put the tent up, but I was reluctant for a repeat of last week so I insisted we carried on. We continued a few kms before the spots of rain came, then we turned immediately left into the flat lands of Kazakhstan – far enough to avoid being seen from the roadside. We pitched our tent, climbed inside and enjoyed a dinner of cold tinned baked beans (at least they were Heinz) and tuna.⁣

As Sod’s Law would have it the rain stopped almost as soon as we settled. It rained very little and we could’ve carried on, but by the time we reached Charyn Canyon the next day I was happy with todays misfortunes…⁣
