Closed Road In China
Hitting a road closure in China has the potential to be a total pain!
We turned up to this large blue sign today, which was blocking the one road we wanted to take.
Chief navigator, Stew checked the Garmin and maps for an alternate route. The only other option was for us to take the G30 which we were recently kicked off, not only this but to join the G30 we would’ve had to go back 10 miles.
I tried to ask the man near the sign if we could go down the road but he just said some things in Chinese to me. Luckily a police car pulled up soon after and they told us we’d be able to take the road. Phew!
One thing that seems guaranteed with the police in China is that they will give you the time you need to get sorted. Sometimes that works against us in terms of getting to our destination “on time”, but we love that there’s always a good citizen close by!
On the same tangent, tonight we arrived in a town without a hotel for foreigners.
We actually planned to camp, but that’s not allowed. The officer at the check point offered to take us to Turpan by car (70miles/110kms) but we really didn’t want that. We want to ride and the road to Turpan looks like it’s going to be so cool! The officer made a few calls and sent us to a hotel nearby. We were so nervous about the cost as it seemed they made an exception for us. It was the cheapest hotel we’ve had for days – and on budget!
