World Tour Kit List – Camping & Cooking
Camping and Cooking Kit List Video
From our apartment in Phnom Penn, Cambodia, on the second half of our world cycling tour, we created a video sharing our cooking and camping kit list. I hope it helps!
Below we have listed the camping & cooking equipment we carried on our world tour.
Disclaimer: We present this kit list to you as a guide. This is by no means the definitive kit list for bike touring because every tour is different. Feel free to adjust and refine your own kit list to meet the needs and requirements of your tour.
Camping & Sleeping
Overall we were very happy with the quality and function of the camping equipment we took. We were a little worried before leaving about not having a free standing tent as it can limit your pitching opportunities but we already managed to make it work. When it was not possible to peg out the tent we were always able to either tie it down to a heavy object such as a bench or rock.
| Item | Quantity | Weight (Grams) | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Hilleberg Nallo 3 | 1 | 2670 | We love the Nallo 3. It's perfect for two people with gear. Ours is absolutely immaculate and we've been cycle touring for two years continuously with it. |
Hilleberg Nallo 3 Foot print | 1 | 517 | |
MSR Tent Stakes | 1 | 123 | |
Rab Ascent 500 Hydrophobic Down Sleeping Bag | 2 | 1100 | Super cosy sleeping bag! The sleep limit is -6 and we genuinely did camp in -6 and were fine. |
Thermarest NeoAir X Lite - Large | 1 | 635 | |
Thermarest NeoAir X Lite - Regular | 1 | 340 | We took two different sized sleeping mats; regular for Zoe since she's smaller and it's 200g lighter. |
Exped Air Pillow | 2 | 80 | These aren't the most of comfortable of pillows but when it comes to bulk and weight we haven't found anything better - overall |
Rab Traveller Silk Sleeping Bag Liner | 2 | 170 | The purpose of the sleeping bag liner is to keep the sleeping bag clean. We didn't like sleeping in the liners and won't be taking them on a second tour. |
Sea to Summit Event Compression Dry Sack (Small) | 2 | 114 | Important to keep your clothes and bedding dry. Although the ortlieb panniers are very waterproof, water sometimes finds it's way in. The panniers can also get wet inside if you have to open them while it's raining. |
Fleece Travel Blanket | 1 | 1210 | |
Selecting a sleeping bag for a 4 seasons tour is never straight forward. We never planned to be camping in winter but knew there was a change we'd have to. The Rab Ascent 500 sleeping bags were a good fit for our trip, they were a bit too warm in the summer but we we're only ever cold once while camping at high altitude in the mountains of China.
Cooking
We decided to take the MSR WhisperLite International Stove because it can run on Petrol (Gasoline). We found that once we got east of Instanbul it was no longer possible to find gas canisters and so having a petro stove was essentail.
| Item | Quantity | Weight (Grams) | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
MSR WhisperLite International Camping Stove | 1 | 309 | This stove has two settings: on and off. It boils like mad. Although it is great and runs off petrol, which is why we chose it, I might take the dragon fly on the next big tour. |
MSR Fuel Bottle 20oz - Red ONE | 1 | 159 | |
MSR Alpinist 2 Cook System | 1 | 618 | We cooked way more than we camped, so this kit has been used a lot and it's coming on the second phase of the world tour trip. Great piece of kit! |
MSR Folding Fork | 1 | 9.5 | |
MSR Folding Spoon | 1 | 9.5 | |
Victorinox Tomato Knife | 1 | 80 | |
Tin Opener | 1 | 70 | We highly recommend this tin opener! |
Dish Cloth | 1 | 31 | |
Fairy Washing Up Liquid | 1 | 120 | You've proabably for this at home already, decant some into a plastic travel bottle. |
Ortlieb Water-Bag | 1 | 120 | |
Wooden Spoon | 1 | 30 | We were so obsessed with weight we even cut half the handle off our wooden spoon! |
Silicone Spatula | 1 | 40 | |
Stainless Steel Scourers | 1 | 15 | |
Fire Steel | 1 | 38 | |
Lighter | 1 | 16 | |
Waterproof Matches | 1 | 11 | |
