Çay In Turkey

Çay, or as we know it, tea.⁣

Tea is a bigger part of Turkish custom than I ever imagined. Usually when I think of tea I think of China or England.⁣
⁣
In Turkey you will see many people enjoying Çay. In fact you can get Çay pretty much anywhere. Shop keepers will pop out into the street offering Çay to passers-by on a silver tray. ⁣
⁣
You can also get Çay at your local petrol station. A couple days ago we stopped at a petrol station for a refuel, I bought sandwiches and water. The staff member offered us a place to sit and poured us some Çay! He insisted that we took sugar as an extra fuel for our bike ride.⁣

Çay is offered to diners in most (not all) restaurants and it comes free of charge.⁣
⁣
Today Stew and I stopped at a fruit stall and bought some grapes – the man on the stand invited us to eat the grapes on his table near his stand. He also delighted us with çay. We couldn’t communicate but it was my favourite moment of the day – the views were gorgeous – overlooking a lake under the blue skies eating delicious grapes!
